What Inspires You?

Pash, aka Matt Pashkow, has interviewed 40 famous designers about what inspires them. The result was this book he titled Inspirability. He sent out cameras to the designers to take self portraits and to capture their workspace. He also called them for phone interviews (I particularly like Erik Spiekermann’s interview the best). The form entries are my favorite part of this book where the designers have handwritten their answers. They are enjoyable to both read and look at.
Some of the famous designers featured are Michael Bierut, Erik Spiekermann, Petrula Vrontikis, Stephan Sagmeister, Luba Lukova, Chip Kidd, Paula Scher and Milton Glaser. Of the total 40 designers in this book one thing immediately took me by surprise—18 write in all caps. I found it interesting because, as designers, we all know that a large amount of type in all caps is typically hard to read. I have no hypothesis as to why this phenomena occurs but it really piqued my interest—even I write in all caps if the mood strikes.

And here’s mine!
Name: Cade
Hometown: Fort Collins, Colorado
Turn ons: intelligence, creativity, outgoing fearless people
Turn offs: whiners
Favorite toy as a child: fountain pen (hey, I taught myself cursive in kindergarten–I just liked to write!) and Crayola markers (had the fat and thin, and I kept them in perfect rainbow order).
Favorite toy now: PSP
Languages you speak: English, a little French, a little Spanish, some Yiddish, and most important of all, understand and can speak decent Cajun.
3 of your favorite movies: Donnie Darko (regular version, not the Director’s Cut), Neverending Story, and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (I have strange tastes, I realize.)
3 of your favorite books: A Wrinkle In Time (first book to read!), Where the Sidewalk Ends (another fave from childhood), Blackwood Farm
If you could have any super power what would it be: The ability to survive and thrive in any condition (whether it’s in Venus’ highly acidic climate, the frozen harshness of Mount Everest, leagues under the sea, et cetera), so I could literally go anywhere and do about anything. Otherwise, I’d like the ability to stay young and live forever because I want to experience life through generations–the world just keeps getting more and more interesting, and I don’t want to miss a moment.
If not working in design, what would you be doing: globe trotting, hopefully for a living.
Most inspired statement, heard or said: Design is EVERYWHERE!
